Plot:

Ray Kasten (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and Jessica Cobb (Julia Roberts) are homicide detectives, but their lives are torn apart on one case when the victim is Cobb's daughter. They find evidence that points towards a young man, Marzin, but find themselves up against the dirty tactics of the FBI who want to protect their asset as he is an informant on a larger anti-terrorism surveillance task in the area. Ray lets him slip away, and wracked with guilt he looks through a few thousand mug shots every night for a dozen years in the hope that he can make amends and catch the one that got away.

So, how does it end?

Ray is talking to Marzin in an interrogation room after he got lucky and managed to grab him at the baseball stadium. He's not getting anywhere, and Sloane (Nicole Kidman) enters the room to tell him he has to let him go. She gets an uneasy feeling about Marzin straight away, so uses some good old-fashioned tactics to put him down and get a rise from him, hoping to embarrass him into an angry outburst.

He takes the bait, and drops his trousers, then throws a punch at her. Ray steps in and goes to town on him, leaving him badly beaten up and unconscious.

Soon though, they hear the charges will be dropped, as he's needed for the undercover terrorism task. They are riding in the elevator together, along with Jessica Cobb, when the accused steps in. He gives them a smirk, before he's on his way. Cobb finds it hard to control herself, but tells them to leave it alone.

Skip forward to the present, and in the garage Ray is busted after following the con he thinks is Marzin back to the chop shop. They drag him inside and are about to shoot him, when Cobb shows up with her crew.  The dodgy cop is hit and goes down, but they kill a few bad guys in retaliation.  Ray knocks out the main dude he was after.

He tells Jessica it's him, he knows it. But she tells him it's not - she knows this because after that night in the elevator, she followed him outside, hit him over the head and bundled him into the trunk of her car. Then took him somewhere quiet, opened the trunk, and fired several rounds inside. That's why no one has seen him since. And why the FBI guy in charge was wrong, and he wasn't essential to the ongoing terrorism case.

Ray gets thinking about something Jessica said, that the bad guy should serve a proper sentence, and that she likes to live alone away from everybody where it's quiet. He goes to her home, and follows her to an out-building ... where he sees she has kept Marzin chained up all this time.  He's behind iron bars, with a hunchback, and can barely utter the sentence 'Make her talk to me'.

Ray tells her to do the right thing, and gives her a gun.

Outside he starts digging a grave. And we hear a gun shot.
